Police stalwart retires
It is an extremely stressful environment but he is grateful to his family and friends for their ongoing support and unconditional love.
If you look past Colonel Carel van Loggerenberg’s blue uniform, shiny boots, broad shoulders and gentle blue eyes. you would see someone’s Oom, father, friend, colleague and commander.
Col. van Loggerenberg began his policing career in 1978 at Kroonstad in the Free State.
He joined the K9 Unit and was transferred to Port Shepstone K9 in 1983 where he enjoyed working with his canine colleagues.
He then became a commissioned officer in 1992 and was promoted to Major to Durban K9.
Col. van Loggerenberg progressed over the years and was restructured in 2007 to Margate SAPS Crime Prevention until 2009 when he returned to Port Shepstone Crime Prevention.
He served here as Charge Office Commander and is now retiring as Acting VISPOL Commander this Friday.
Highlights in his career was seeing the establishment of the K9 Unit in Pinetown in 1995/1996 where he thoroughly enjoyed working with animals, a passion close to his heart.
Col. van Loggerenberg loves the South Coast and will enjoy spending his leisure time doing DIY projects around the home.
He plans to do some travelling but not too far from his beloved coast.
In this line of work you need broad shoulders to carry not only your load but sometimes those of your loved ones and colleagues.

Practical field training, management courses and deployments often took him away from home and now plans to make up for this during his retirement.
Col. van Loggerenberg admits that he will miss the work and the people he has come to know, love and respect.
Colleagues and junior members agree that his gentle eyes and easy nature make him approachable and popular.
Port Shepstone Station Commander, Brigadier Sandra Nala wished him well on behalf of her management and expressed their despondence at seeing one of the pillars at Saps Port Shepstone leaving for retirement.
She further thanked him for his unwavering loyalty and commitment to the Saps.
