Economic relief for South Coast businesses

With tourism establishments and businesses on the South Coast hit particularly hard during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) has welcomed the implementation of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s (RNM) Economic Relief Plan which will alleviate the financial burden on business operations from December 2020 to December 2021.
Among the approved items are:
* The waiving of all business licence renewal and issuing fees from December 2020 to December 2021, for all legally trading businesses in possession of valid business licences.
* The changing of rates categorisation for B&Bs, guesthouses and lodges to household-based rates fees, for the same period. This is only applicable to operators who have been trading legally, and who have a good rates standing as of April 2020.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on tourism establishments in the area, and the effects are likely to be felt for some time yet, which makes this relief plan absolutely vital for businesses at this time,” said CEO of USCT, Phelisa Mangcu.
“We urge all establishments to take advantage of the business licence renewals and applications so that they are operating legally and can benefit from such government support,” she said.
Maxwell Mbili, Municipal Manager of RNM, added: “The Draft Economic Relief Plan, submitted to the Department of Development Planning Services in November last year, has been adopted to address the social and economic devastation brought on by Covid-19. RNM will continue to work closely with the private and public sector to provide support for businesses and communities during these challenging times.”
