Romeo speeds into town… with tech

The South Coast is home to a number of motoring personalities, classic car lovers, and petrol heads in general.

Now you can add to the list drag racing veteran and motoring enthusiast in general, Romeo Meyer.

He has moved to the coast from Johannesburg last year and has now recently opened his new shop, Speed Tech, situated at the new Marburg complex near Checkmart.

Its services include normal car servicing, oil changes, major services as well as work on fan belts, cylinder heads, repairs, tune ups conversions and, of course, dyno tuning.

Romeo has extensive experience in professional dyno tuning and has been drag racing for around 35 years.

It is through his racing experiences that he has gained first-hand knowledge about vehicle tuning.

Romeo has a real passion for vehicles and engines, and, along with his wife Alice, looks forward to meeting and helping new customers.

To say that cars and racing is a passion would be putting it mildly.

Some of his favourites have included a Lotus, an Opel Kadett 383 V18 (with nos) and a Datsun GX V6 with rotaries in.

He’s raced since the early 1990s, winning a cupboard full of trophies in top eliminators, many in his V6 Escort, with nitrous of course.

Ironically perhaps, Romeo has shown that it’s not all about raw power and speed, having also raced radio-controlled cars, where finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination are vital.

Some of the cars in his garage are ones he has built himself and raced.

He is originally from Durban and is pleased to be back in KwaZulu-Natal.

And he’s also looking forward to racing his Lotus 7 around Dezzi South Coast Raceway once Covid-19 protocols allow it.
