‘No nerves from the knees down’: Little Liebe needs a lot of love
Engela felt it was unfair to take life away from her and, after careful thought, named her Liebe which is German for love.
Liebe is a tiny, disabled Pekinese-cross, not yet six months old, in need of an operation to have her back legs amputated.
In November last year, Engela Parsons of Hibberdene, received a message from a breeder asking if she wanted the puppy, or it would have to be euthanized.
Being an animal lover, as well as voluntary rescuer, Engela knew in that moment she would take her.
Uncertain as to why Liebe’s back legs weren’t working, Engela took her to the Lower South Coast SPCA to have her examined.
“Upon examination it was found she has a birth defect, and instead of what was thought to be underdeveloped back leg muscles, Liebe has no nerves from the knees down.”
Then, for reasons unknown, Liebe has begun to chew her leg and what looks like a sore has started to develop.
Unfortunately, both her back legs will need to be amputated and this can only be done once she is six months old.
“Liebe has showed us how to live life, and not to let a disability hold one back from exploring. She is a beautiful and free-spirited dog, who has made best friends with a cat named Mitchell,” said Engela.
Engela felt it was unfair to take life away from her and, after careful thought, named her Liebe which is German for love.
She has raised funds selling teddy bears knitted by a group of generous church women in order to buy Liebe a modified wheelchair of sorts.
The balance was donated by a donor who wished to remain anonymous.
On a positive note, Liebe will be the face of Glenda Muriel’s Enchanted Tutus, an organisation which creates awareness around the dangers of interbreeding, as well as pets with disabilities.
Engela needs to raise R6500 for the amputation.
