GBVF march in Umzinto raises awareness
A candle-lighting ceremony was held in memory of those who had lost their lives and for those who continue to live under abuse.
The Umzinto CBD came to a standstill on October 6 as Umdoni community members came together to march on the street, raising awareness of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF)

Residents, faith-based organisations, youth, men and women stood together and marched from the Shell Garage to Umzinto Town Hall, where a prayer ceremony was held.
The Mtwalume Brass Band, Umdoni mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli and other delegates led the march.
The CBD march made for a powerful demonstration of solidarity, and a call for safer families and communities following nationwide outrage over increasing GBVF cases.
At the town hall, an emotional candle-lighting ceremony was held in memory of those who had lost their lives, and for those who continue to live under abuse, afraid to speak out.

The prayer day also commemorated Heritage Day, highlighting the importance of Ubuntu, dignity, respect and compassion as values that should shape the legacy left for future generations.
At the event, the mayor called on the entire community to take responsibility in the fight against GBVF.
She also urged men and boys to take a stand against abuse, calling on them to be protectors of their families and communities and to speak out when women and children are harmed.
