Selvan Chetty praised for sterling work
In 1996, he was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr Peace Award and in 1997 the Sanlam Sunday Tribune Award for Peace Work and Bridgebuilding.
Well-known Port Shepstone social activist, Selvan Chetty received the Ammen Award on Good Friday for his contribution to socio-economic upliftment.
It was presented to him by the Mount Edgecombe Hindu Temple Trust and Shri Mariammen Temple Society, which is based in Durban and the largest of its kind in South Africa.
The highly prestigious award has been presented to worthy candidates for nearly three decades.
Mr Chetty was acknowledged for his extraordinary commitment to the ‘freedom struggle’, as well as to his dedication and skills in helping restore dignity and constitutional rights for all South Africans.
“We applaud your continued work in realising a non-sexist, non-racist, democratic South Africa. We are proud of your sterling work,” read the award.
Mr Chetty, acknowledged all those who made it possible for him to serve others.
“There are many supporters and volunteers who assist me to do what I do. This award belongs to them too.”
Mr Chetty currently serves as chief whip of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and has previously received two awards for human rights and humanitarian work.

This was for his work at a time of major conflict between certain communities on the South Coast.
