Young author launches first book
Ekta describes her book launch as fulfilling, and stated that she received support from many family members, friends, as well as the Umkomaas and Scottburgh communities.
Umkomaas local and newly established author, Ekta Somera, launched her very first book on her 22nd birthday at Scottburgh Mall last Sunday.
Ekta describes her book, Made in Poetry, as a collection of memories and observations she has written about over a period of time where she experienced great sadness to immense joy.
This is why the book is divided into two parts, that is the destruction and the renaissance.
Ekta matriculated at Umkomaas Secondary School in 2016 and considers her English teacher, DS Nair, ‘the greatest’.
The young author used to jot down her feelings now and then and turned them into poems. She soon realised that she was in possession of many poems and was convinced that she had enough content to create and publish a book.
Ekta decided to go ahead with the book creation with the intention of inspiring others to follow their passion. The book is targeted at the youth of South Africa as it has always been a goal to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Ekta describes her book launch as fulfilling, and stated that she received support from many family members, friends, as well as the Umkomaas and Scottburgh communities.
“It was great to see some of my past teachers attend the launch as well as Member of Parliament, Narend Singh and his wife Manitha.”
“The most precious moment for me was when someone briefed through my book and their reaction was ‘wow’.”
Ekta is grateful for the feedback she has received, and truly believes that ‘Made in Poetry’ will make the difference she wants it to.
“I will be visiting schools in the near future to promote my book to a young audience with the aspiration to enhance their passion for the English language,” added Ekta.
The author is in her final year of criminology with the University of South Africa and does freelancing writing in her spare time.
She is currently writing for SALT digital youth magazine and looks forward to publishing many more books in the future, poetry anthologies and perhaps, short stories for children..
