Patrolling police catch criminals
Four suspects, aged between 19 and 31, appeared yesterday (June 9) for a formal bail application.
Police have made a number of successful arrests in the last month.
Port Edward police members were patrolling when they received information of a man in possession of a firearm at the taxi rank on May 28.
Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said members proceeded to search the man fitting the description given and found a pistol tucked into his waistband.
The man (18) was arrested and appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm. The case was postponed to this week for further investigation.
In a separate incident, four men driving at high speed on the N2 in Port Shepstone were arrested by Saps highway patrol on May 30 at about 04:00.
Capt Mpinge said that upon searching the vehicle which did not have number plates, two knives, a toy gun, cellphones and cash was recovered.
It was established that the vehicle was stolen in Umlazi in March 2021, and was taken to the police pound for further investigation.

District Commissioner Major General Sethenya Nxamagele said that firearms in the wrong hands are dangerous.
The public is commended for reporting illegal firearms within their communities and are encouraged to continue to provide police with information on all criminal activities.
