Two mamba rescues have kept South Coast snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe on his toes.

Sarel was called out to Gamalakhe on September 20 to remove a black mamba found in an outdoor storeroom.

Finding the property proved more challenging than catching the snake.

“It wasn’t easy to find the place,” said Sarel. “I stopped and asked an elderly gentleman, and he guided me directly to the location.”

Once he arrived, the difficult part of locating the property was over.

“The easy part was to catch the black mamba,” he said.

Then, on September 9, Sarel was called to Sea Park after a green mamba was spotted in a tree.

The rescue took place in the late afternoon, with fading light making the snake harder to spot.

“Thanks to my headlight, I could spot him,” said Sarel.

The green mamba was safely removed and relocated.

Sarel regularly responds to snake call-outs across the South Coast, reminding residents that encountering a snake does not necessarily mean it needs to be killed.
