Beaches start to re-open as sardines move on

The only confirmed netting since last Thursday was in Scottburgh this morning.

Tweni beach is one of the beaches which will remain closed at this stage.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has been closely monitoring the movement of sardines by land and by conducting aerial surveys.

Greg Thompson of KZN Sharks Board said that due to the lack of sardine related activity at the moment, Sharks Board has opened the following beaches on the South Coast to allow for bathing as from today:

  • T.O. Strand
  • Glenmore
  • San Lameer
  • Southbroom
  • Ski-boat Bay
  • Ramsgate
  • Lucien
  • St Michaels on Sea
  • Southport
  • Umzumbe
  • Amanzimtoti

Mr Thompson said the only confirmed netting he was are aware of was a very small net of five crates at Scottburgh Beach this morning (Tuesday). This is the only confirmed netting since last Thursday.

The Sharks Board will continue to closely monitor sardine activity and remove or replace shark safety gear as required.
