Bowlers support PinkDrive to fight cancer
Members from various bowling clubs in Durban and local clubs, such as Riverside in Uvongo, came together to compete to raise funds, with 60 playing on the day.
During what was an afternoon of fun and laughter, Village Bowling Club in Margate recently raised R11 500 for the PinkDrive, a non-profit organisation which reminds people that the early detection of cancer can save lives.
Janice Benecke, the Durban administrator for PinkDrive was delighted with the support received. She has survived three different types of cancer.
“I was happy when Dave Garland, president of Village BC and Clive Bignell (club treasurer), got together with tournament organiser Johnny Louch to host a bowls day with funds going to PinkDrive. Everyone was dressed in pink and came to the party, and we had such fun,” she said.
Members from various bowling clubs in Durban and local clubs, such as Riverside in Uvongo, came together to compete to raise funds, with 60 playing on the day.
The winners on the day walked away with hampers and sponsored by Dis-Chem and Hollywoodbets.
However, while the bowls was fun, there was a serious side to the day.
“Most men don’t really check for cancer, so when you get to 40, make sure you get your prostrate checked, and when you get a little bit older, your colon. Colon cancer is one of the biggest killers,” said Johnny.
Through the help of sponsors, PinkDrive offers free mammograms, ultrasounds, pap smears, breast exams, breast education and general medical advice.
PinkDrive has a brother company called “More Balls than most” which concentrates on prostate and testicular cancer.
“The earlier you pick it up, the greater your chance for survival. I’m sure everyone knows someone who has died from cancer, so it’s very important to raise awareness.”
