Scottburgh locals had high expectations for sardines to finally make a big appearance in mid-South Coast waters this morning (June 15), but unfortunately, the little silver stunners chose to once again skip the area.

Shoals of the fish were spotted near Cutty Sark Hotel in Scottburgh and attracted many fisherfolk and spectators. About five or six boats were launched throughout the morning to try and net the fish, but none were successful.

A fisherman at the beach claimed that before more people showed up to get in on the action, there was one net which was able to bring a small amount of sards to shore – just enough to fill five crates.

After a few hours out in the water, the sard search was called off, boats returned to shore and reports started coming in indicating that sardines had already made their way up the coastline to Winkelspruit and were being netted there.

Even though the morning was a bit of a disappointment to many, others were glad to see some sort of action in the area and enjoyed the exciting atmosphere.
