Ugu celebrates outstanding mathematics results in 2020

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education recently honoured the Ugu Teaching and Learning Specialists-Further Education and Training during a mathematics and mathematical literacy awards function at the Margate Hotel.

This comes after the Ugu District’s exceptional performance in mathematics and mathematical literacy, in the 2020 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The room was filled with inspiring and resilient mathematical leaders, from district representatives and subject advisors to school principals, department heads and educators.

Throughout the difficult academic year, the onus fell on these leaders to carry the class of 2020 through.

They rose to the challenge, overcame the fears and anxieties surrounding Covid-19 and came up with innovative ways to support each other while ensuring excellent results from their learners.

Guest speaker, Dr Hintsa Mhlane said that the district was well deserving of such a celebration and emphasised the fact that educators are national resources.

The Ugu District ranked first in KZN for mathematics with 64.9% and third for mathematical literacy with 82.7%.

Awards were presented by the district’s subject advisors, Onnie Mgaga (mathematical literacy), Kwesi Jordan (mathematics) and Cliff Govender (mathematics).

These awards were based off of school’s pass rates and the number of distinctions achieved in both mathematics and mathematical literacy.

Recipients of these prestigious awards included local schools such as Port Shepstone Islamic, Port Shepstone High, Port Shepstone Secondary, Marburg Secondary, Nombuso High and St Martin de Porres, among many others.

The Ugu District clusters have set a target of 70% in mathematics for this year and are confident that they will achieve it.
