Comrades Centenary run goes virtual

South Coast Strider Deborah Berridge ran the full distance, as she did last year, clocking a time of 11:24:38.

Sunday, June 13 marked the 100th edition of the Comrades Marathon with many South Coast runners joining in on the ultimate human race, with a twist.

Like last year, the event could not take place due to Covid-19, so most of the athletes took part in a virtual version of the race, some running the full distance and others only 5km.

South Coast Strider Deborah Berridge ran the full distance, as she did last year, clocking a time of 11:24:38.

She ran a circuit from the Shelly Centre to Lilliecrona Boulevard in Uvongo and back.

In the process she raised funds for CHOC (childhood cancer), which is one of the Comrades charities.

Her goal was R10 000 and she still has about R1800 to go.

Pastor Daan van Niekerk, who last year ran the Hundred Miler just for fun, ran 90km in 13:53:35 which included a two hour, 10 minute ice bath.

He’s moved away, to pastor a church in Nylstroom, but is still a member of Striders.

Daan ran 45km from his church to Naboomspruit, turned around and came back to complete the 90km.

Locally, runners ran various routes.

In other news, Striders was honoured to have one of its legends, Zwelitsha ‘Tiger’ Gono, be invited to commemorate the Comrades Centenary in Pietermaritzburg, with 33 other legends including Bruce Fordyce and Nick Bester. Tiger has been a club member for 45 years and has run 42 Comrades.

Martin and Daleen Fourie, members of Sasol Secunda Club, ran a circuit from San Lameer to Shelly Beach, clocking up a time of 16:28:39.

They said the last 15km was ‘absolute torture’ and wouldn’t attempt this kind of thing again without proper training!
