Business owners seek municipality’s help

Mayor Sibongile Khathi assured business owners that the municipality will conduct its own assessments to ascertain the extent of damages and devise possible corrective measures.

Before the Umzinto clean-up following the protest action last week, Umdoni Municipality met with the Umzinto Business Forum to discuss ways moving forward and to sympathise with those who had lost their businesses.

Mayor Sibongile Khathi assured business owners that the municipality will conduct its own assessments to ascertain the extent of damages and devise possible corrective measures.

“This meeting between the municipality and the affected business community was also to actively intervene and give assurance to this forum of the municipality’s standpoint on this matter while simultaneously refuting the manipulation of this situation for political grandstanding,” said mayor Khathi.

The business forum appreciated this initiative and further requested that the municipality considers giving them amnesty on rates for the affected businesses, suspension on property evaluations and a possible relief grant.

Mayor Khathi took note of these requests and stated that it will be submitted to the relevant municipal structures for deliberation and further taken to provincial level for consideration.

A task team was formed that will be the point of contact between the business forum and the municipality going forward.
