Banana distributor’s stock looted
Engelbrecht said he has not been able to supply his clients because there is no stock, and he is now trying to find a place where he can start up again.
Makuluskop fresh produce market, which is owned by Henk Engelbrecht and based at the Ugu Market in Mkholombe, was looted and burnt during the unrest last week.
Engelbrecht, known as Makuluskop, is a banana distributor. He said there is no recovery from the damage caused to his fresh produce business.
He said hundreds of streets sellers and vendors are suffering because of the incident at the market, where he kept his bananas for distribution.
Engelbrecht said he has not been able to supply his clients because there is no stock, and he is now trying to find a place where he can start up again.
“There is no recovery from this. If only they had taken the bananas and not burnt the building it would have been better.”
He said the building has to be rebuilt.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leaders from the KZN legislature visited affected areas on the South Coast.
Unfortunately the DA representatives and journalists were denied access to the area by security personnel, although DA councillor Leonard Ngcobo had proof that the Acting Municipal Manager Sibusiso Sithole had given permission to enter the premises.
Engelbrecht said he was also denied entry when he wanted to access the area where his bananas were stored, so that he could remove whatever was left.
He said he has two workers and fortunately they will not lose their jobs.
He has acquired containers at his own expense, so he can restart his business.
