Snake catcher springs into action

In South Africa it is the only one-of-its-kind snake, very large and bulky and cannot be easily confused with other snakes.

When temperatures rise, snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe‘s hobby of rescuing snakes becomes a busy one.

On Monday evening this week, he saved a Southern African python that a resident spotted at the back of his house in Leisure Bay.

Sarel said these snakes are protected in Southern Africa as vulnerable in the latest edition of the South African Red Data Book, and may not be captured or killed.

In South Africa it is the only one-of-its-kind snake, very large and bulky and cannot be easily confused with other snakes.

It feeds largely on warm-blooded prey like small antelope, monkeys, game birds and dassies, but also takes leguaans and even crocodiles.

Sarel thanked the people from Leisure Bay for caring about the snake.
Be sure to save Sarel’s number: 082 683 1604.
