Ugu District Municipality elected its councillors, mayor, deputy mayor and speaker at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Thursday.

Without any arguments and chaos Ugu’s inauguration went smoothly and was well organised. The position for the new speaker was contested by former Ugu mayor Sizwe Ngcobo and Leonard Ngcobo of the Democratic Alliance.

And as expected the new mayor is Cllr Phumlile Mthiyane who was previously the deputy mayor of Ugu.

Mthiyane is from Izingolweni and has served on the Executive Committee and Portfolio of Water Services and Infrastructure at Ugu.

In her address she said the time for prolonged service delivery should come to an end. She said she hopes that they all work together regardless of their political affiliations.

The new leadership started work immediately after being sworn by Magistrate Charmaine Barnard.
