Festive season in full swing
Mayor Sibongile Khathi kicked off the launch by welcoming all to the area, and reminded everyone to be responsible while they enjoy the festivities to come.
Holidaymakers have been flocking in, locals are slowly getting into a more relaxed routine and festivities on the mid-South Coast have officially begun as Christmas and New Year draws nearer.
Last week, Umdoni Municipality in partnership with the Department of Forestry and Fisheries and the Environment, KZN Sharks Board, KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Ugu South Coast Tourism, Ugu District Municipality, Oceans Alive, All Sorts, Scottburgh Beach Supertube, Blue Marlin Hotel and Umdoni Community Radio launched the festive season programme at Scottburgh main beach.
Mayor Sibongile Khathi kicked off the launch by welcoming all to the area, and reminded everyone to be responsible while they enjoy the festivities to come.
She also urged people to continue observing Covid-19 protocols as infections have been increasing, as has the foot count in the area during this time of year.
The mayor took note of the empty and unkept swimming pools at the beach and committed to ensuring a fun filled beach experience by expediting swift renovations of the pool with the municipality’s management soon.
The highlight of the day for many was the KZN Sharks Board’s display of shark jaws and teeth and a shark dissection.
The purpose of this was to educate the public on sharks, how they moved and sensed people in the water. Beachgoers were also warned to be extra cautious and to never swim while under the influence of alcohol.
Local lifeguards were present and performed a rescue demonstration.
Umdoni’s Billy the Bin mascot went around showing the public, particularly children, how to keep the beach environment clean by picking up after themselves and throwing away rubbish in designated bins.
The mayor and her team were treated to some mini golf at the beach while beachgoers were entertained by the local radio station and dancers.
With regards to safety and security, Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis, said that police has operational plans in place for the festive season and that reservists will also be deployed in the policing precinct of Scottburgh.
“We wish all residents and holidaymakers a happy and safe festive season in Umdoni, and let us remember to abide by the rules and refrain from engaging in activities that are against the law,” added Mayor Khathi.
