Cautious optimism ahead of Christmas season, despite challenges
However, it's too early to tell how well local businesses will do, especially with some areas struggling with water supply and then the obvious threat of Covid-19 still an issue.
With the beaches busy and many accommodation places full, the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is the place to be this festive season.
Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) said the festive season is undoubtedly one of its busiest times on the South Coast.
“We have noted an increase in visitor numbers with many accommodation venues full. We are extremely fortunate in that the South Coast is able to offer visitors a variety of outdoor, well-ventilated travel options,” she said.
However, it’s too early to tell how well local businesses will do, especially with some areas struggling with water supply, the problems with E.coli in some lagoons and rivers, and then the obvious threat of Covid-19 still an issue.
Meanwhile, Mangcu said the recently conducted Ugu South Coast Tourism Visitor Survey Report indicated a rise in domestic tourism, with many visitors attracted to the coast’s beaches – six of which are Blue Flag.
“We are thrilled that six of our popular beaches have just been awarded the internationally-recognised Blue Flag status, the criteria of which includes compliance with national safety regulations. Our swimming beaches are all manned by exceptional lifeguards, and we encourage all beachgoers to take the necessary precautions to remain safe in the water over the festive season,” she said.
Visitor safety and experience has also been enhanced with the deployment of Tourism Monitors at Margate beach, St Michael’s beach, Hibberdene beach and Scottburgh beach.
The 12-month Tourism Monitors Programme is being run by the National Department of Tourism in partnership with the AGB Group. This programme trains and creates employment opportunities for youth who will patrol the beaches, report crimes and provide tourists with information.
USCT has continued to promote Covid-19 protocols and has communicated regulation changes via its dedicated Covid-19 portal on its website, www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za.
Visitor safety remains a priority for our tourism establishments throughout the year.
