Tips to ensure as safe a festive season as possible

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge suggests the following tips for a safer season.

You’ve worked hard all year, so don’t fund a holiday for criminals.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge suggested the following tips for a safer season:

1. Always cover your pin by shielding the hand that is typing it, even if you are alone at the ATM.

2. Be cautious of notifications that you have won any competitions, especially if you did not enter. Do not respond with any personal information.

3. Carry as little cash as possible. Use alternative banking methods such as internet and cellphone banking. Do not display money in public.

4. Do not carry too much cash when going to drinking places. Do not display money in public.

Businesses:

Do not keep large amounts of cash on the business premises and be on the lookout for suspicious customers. Business owners must not allow entry to anyone after the business has closed and avoid opening the store late at night.

When in public:

Make sure your vehicle is locked by checking the door and do not leave valuables and any items lying in the car. Lock them in the boot. Try to avoid leaving your vehicle parked for long periods and if you must, check on it from time to time

Keep a list of emergency numbers close by. If you have an alarm system, make sure it is serviced regularly and in good working order.

Telephone numbers to call in Port Shepstone are the Port Shepstone Saps Community Service Centre (CSC) 039 688 1002/3 or the control room on 039 6829204/9211 or SAPS 10111.
