No show of councillors at RNM meeting
Last Thursday, another meeting was set to take place but 43 councillors decided not to attend and could not meet the quorum.
It has been more than a month since local elections, but Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has not as yet elected its leadership.
Last Thursday, another meeting was set to take place but 43 councillors decided not to attend and could not meet the quorum.
The meeting was again postponed for a date yet to be confirmed.
This means the municipality remains with no executive committee, mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip.
In a statement released by the spokesman of RNM Simon April, the speaker. Zodwa Mzindle and the municipal manager, Max Mbili have submitted reports to the office of the MEC of Cogta regarding both the meeting of November 23 and December 3 which deferred these outstanding items.
On Tuesday this week, April said that the MEC has not yet responded to them.
“Another report will be submitted for this very meeting, which was supposed to take place on December 23.”
When Mbili was asked if this can cause the municipality not to function properly, he said at the moment everything is fine.
“We are not saying it won’t have any impact but right now we are doing okay.”
The Herald spoke to the DA caucus leader Leon Garbade and with frustration he said that this was totally unacceptable and that the ANC is putting its own needs before the people.
The IFP chairperson Sfundo Ngwane said the party was very disappointed.
“Today was such a loss because we were ready and prepared to elect, a notice was given to all councillors but none of them apologised for not attending the meeting but they were able to meet in Margate in the morning before the meeting. “
Ngwane said they will also be contacting the MEC of Cogta.
