South Coast roads saw some early morning hustle and bustle as public school learners returned to their classrooms.
For some, it officially marked their first day at ‘big school‘ with lots of anxious parents saying their goodbyes at the school gate. Local schools were all systems go, having put in ample preparation, safety and health protocols to accommodate learners mid-pandemic while maintaining a well-structured syllabus.

As with previous years there were a few teary eyes but for the majority, there was plenty of eagerness.
Snalo Machi was one of these keen Grade 1 learners to start at Port Shepstone Primary, and according to her mother Nellie, “Snalo was so excited that she woke up at 03:30 to get ready.”
A learner’s Grade 1 year plays a pivotal role in their academic career, as it is during this time that a solid foundation is built for the rest of the years to come.
Layla Gous is another learner who begins Grade 1, also at Port Shepstone Primary, and having been in the formal schooling system from Grade R, she was very confident and calm on her first day.

Southcity Christian Schools also saw smooth sailing while welcoming learners new and old. “It was a great start to the new school year and all the children
settled in so nicely,” the school said.
Most schools have opted to continue with rotational learning, in line with Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga’s recent statement.
“The fact of the matter, is that Covid-19 is very much still with us, and we need to continue to work together to fight it. We are exploring possibilities to return schooling to normal, but we need to do so responsibly,” she said.
Parents are urged to ensure their children have face masks, sanitiser and the required stationery.
Meanwhile, matric results will be announced on Thursday (January 20) and individual results will be accessible on Friday (January 21).
