Beware of online scams

Police advise the public not to pay for items they have not viewed.

The South African Police Service (Saps) informs the public that online scams are increasing drastically.

Police ask people not to pay for cars and other items that are advertised on social media and through adverts that they did not view.

One of the main reasons being that there are sellers who are advertising cars and items by taking random pictures and posting them as if they own them.

It is suggested that buyers meet the seller at a safe place, preferably outside a police station during the day with an adult as a witness.

People are also asked to never make a deposit for items not viewed either.

If you are selling an item online, do not accept EFT payments from strangers as scammers are producing fraudulent deposit slips.

Police advise the public to exercise caution when receiving payment and not to entertain those who identify themselves from a bank or a network provider.

It is also emphasised that people should not accept job offers from people they met on the street, as they usually try to scam others of cash and valuables.
