Spreading some Madiba magic
The two organisations received food parcels, clothing, water, and more in donations.
In celebration of Mandela Day, the Gamalakhe Community Health Centre in partnership with Old Mutual, visited the Vuku Zithathe non-profit organisation and the Othandweni Cerebral Palsy Day Care Centre in Gamalakhe on Monday, July 18.
Public relations officer at the Gamalakhe CHC, Lifa Radebe, said they visited these organisations to deliver food parcels, clothing, water and more.
Radebe said the items given to the centres were donated by the staff of Gamalakhe CHC, saying that their our aim is to sustain this programme through operation Sukuma Sakhe.
He added that it is very sad to hear patients telling the hospital’s staff that they have to take their medications on an empty stomach.
“With the cost of living becoming a struggle for more South Africans, this Mandela Day comes at a time where everyone is struggling fuel prices so that is why we want to help in any way possible. This was our second Mandela Day initiative, the first one was in 2019 but all Mandela Day activities were halted by Covid-19 regulations,” said Radebe.
Thembani Luvuno of Othandweni Cerebral Palsy Day Care Centre said they would love to see more of these donations and initiatives since they are working with children with disabilities.
Amos Mzobe of the Vuku Zithathe organisation said every day must be a Mandela Day.
“Thank you to the Gamalakhe CHC for remembering us. This is for the second time we are beneficiaries of such programmes by this health facility and we hope to maintain a good sustainable relationship with it. Every day should be a Mandela Day, those who can, should go out and give back to the community as much as they can,” said Mzobe.
Ward 5 councillor Rodney Phumlani Gumbi said it is important that young people are thought about Nelson Mandela and the role he played in the country’s liberation.
“I thank people like Dr Frank Shongwe for coming up with such initiatives and for choosing Vuku Zithathe as one of the beneficiaries as there will be able to feed kids that come from disadvantaged backgrounds in Gamalakhe. It important that we do not only celebrate Nelson Mandela Day, but we also remember the type of leader he was and also teach our children about Nelson Mandela’s legacy,” said Gumbi.
Meanwhile, Gamalakhe CHC’s Radebe said in 2023, they will be targeting non-profit organisations that cater to the elderly.
