Margate man shot dead by POP police member

Information on whether or not the policeman has been arrested is awaited.

The Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that investigations are under way after a Port Shepstone Public Order Policing (POP) member shot dead a man in Margate Extension 3 last Sunday. It is alleged that the policeman and the man had been driving along Marine Drive last Sunday afternoon when they nearly had an accident. The man had been driving in the car with his wife when the incident happened.

Comment from both provincial and local SAPS on the incident has been sought, however, none has been received to date. It is believed that the man followed the policeman (who was off duty) to confront him about his perceived ‘reckless’ driving. It is alleged that, upon arrival at the policeman’s house, the man got out of his car and approached the policeman, who shot him.

The incident was attended to by (IPID) and local SAPS. IPID spokesman Robert Ramokgola said the matter is currently under investigation. Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union spokesman, Richard Mamabolo, said it was distressing that such unnecessary altercations are leading to the loss of lives. “We are against any form of brutality, be it against police or civilians, and would like to urge all parties to exercise restraint when confronted with such situations where emotions can run high, for whatever reasons.”

Information on whether or not the policeman has been arrested is awaited.
