Five charter boat passengers, all Austrian tourists (aged between 25 and 58), were brought safely to shore by NSRI Shelly Beach last Saturday. This was after the boat they were on experienced steering mechanical failure offshore of Shelly Beach. The five tourists were transferred from the boat onto the NSRI rescue craft off-shore.

Melody Herrmann, NSRI Shelly Beach duty controller, said NSRI rescue craft jet-rib was diverted from a routine training exercise nearby to assist. “The transfer was completed without incident, and all passengers were brought safely to shore,” she said.

Despite efforts to repair the steering on the charter boat, it could not be resolved. NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Day was launched to tow the boat back to the beach, which it did without incident. The skipper and crew of the dive charter boat are commended for their assistance during this operation.
