Major milestone for Thompson Motors
The Thompson Motors story along the South Coast began in 1974, when it opened a branch in Shelly Beach.
Thompson Motors proudly commemorates five decades of distinguished service excellence on the South Coast, an achievement built on a legacy that first took shape in Pietermaritzburg 74 years ago.
From the earliest days, as Brian Thompson and Brothers established in 1950, this family-founded venture has evolved into a cornerstone of the community’s automotive landscape.
Legacy of innovation and growth:
The Thompson Motors story along the South Coast began in 1974 when it opened a branch in Shelly Beach. Initially, it offered a BP service station and introduced the beloved Datsun brand. The dealership soon diversified, welcoming Nissan diesel, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Nissan forklifts into its stable.
Over the decades, Thompson Motors has continually adapted to market demands and industry shifts, ultimately transforming into a full-fledged Nissan dealership renowned for its product range, service quality, and community-centred approach.
Milestones over the decades:
1990: Expansion into Shelly Beach, converting a BP service station into the state-of-the-art Thompson Service Centre.
2005: The launch of the Thompson Commercial Centre in Marburg, catering to heavy-duty trucks, forklifts, and commercial vehicle servicing.
2007: Introduction of the Renault franchise, extending the reach to other regions and reinforcing the position as a key South Coast automotive provider.
2014: Addition of the Datsun dealership, underscoring their commitment to meeting diverse customer preferences and providing value-driven vehicle options.
Community-centric excellence
At the heart of Thompson Motors’ success are the values of trust, integrity, and unwavering customer service that have guided the business through successive generations. These principles have nurtured lasting relationships, with many families returning to Thompson Motors for decades, confident in the quality of care they receive.
They also recognise that their customers are also their neighbours and remain dedicated to supporting local initiatives, forging a bond that transcends the showroom floor.
Looking to the future
As the automotive industry marches toward sustainability and innovation, Thompson Motors embraces these changes with enthusiasm. “We are committed to exploring eco-friendly technologies, integrating hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicle options, and enhancing digital customer experiences to ensure each interaction is efficient, informative, and rewarding. By continually investing in staff development, we not only stay ahead of industry trends but also reinforce the personalised service our customers have come to expect,” said owner Clive Thompson.
Thank you for 50 years of support
“On this golden anniversary, we extend our sincerest gratitude to the South Coast community. Your enduring support and loyalty have allowed Thompson Motors not only to grow but also to remain a trusted name in motoring. We would also like to thank our dedicated staff for their contribution. We are certainly grateful to have them on the team. As we look ahead to the next 50 years, we stand ready to deliver continued excellence, cutting-edge innovation, and the shared success that comes from building a future together,” said Thompson.
