New BYD Shark 6 Performance packs power

It steps things up with a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and upgraded electric motors.

If you thought the previous BYD Shark 6 was impressive, well, there’s the new BYD Shark 6 Performance, which recently arrived in South Africa and is available at BYD South Coast in Margate. This flagship plug-in hybrid dual-cab bakkie is packed with power.

It steps things up with a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and upgraded electric motors, which push 350kW and 700Nm of torque.

This beast of a bakkie sprints from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.

The Shark also received an upgrade; it now boasts a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg from 2,500 kg. It is also equipped with a 29.58 kWh Blade battery offering up to 80km of electric range, with a combined Worldwide Harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedure driving range of 640km.

Interestingly, the new BYD Shark features a dedicated ‘crawl mode’ for technical terrain or off-road.

BYD offers a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan (5 services included); a 5-year/100 000km vehicle warranty and an 8-year/200 000km battery warranty.

Sales executive, Andile Cele said the new Shark 6 Performance all-wheel drive is value for money. “It undercuts most established competitors on price while packing loads of onboard tech and a spacious cabin. The independent rear suspension provides an SUV-like smooth ride compared to the choppy leaf-spring on classic bakkies. If you want to find out more, visit me at BYD South Coast and book a test drive.”
