Tweni residents urged to be alert after stabbing

A beach hideout allegedly used by criminals was discovered in the area.

Residents of Umtentweni have been warned to be extra vigilant after a stabbing at a residential property, last Thursday.

According to Selvan Chetty, chairperson of the Umtentweni Community Policing Forum (CPF), at about 11:45 the CPF received a distress call via its 24-hour active monitoring project which is linked to some 1 500 Umtentweni residents.

“CPF members with Lazer 911 pursued the suspects. At the time I was en-route from Port Shepstone listening to the updates. I confronted the suspect along the R102 opposite Sandspit, he fled into the bushes on the beach and disappeared.

“Police were called and a search of the area yielded no results as the suspect could have taken one of many escape routes through the thick natural vegetation. During the search, CPF member Derek Herbst found a hideout with good carpets, clothing, ladies’ handbags and purses, as well as a new roll of plastic presumably for erecting a more permanent shelter,” said Chetty.

He said the CPF will take steps to destroy the shelter as it is in violation of the environmental and admiralty laws.

The hideout discovered by Tweni CPF together with SAPS and Lazer911.

“We thank our volunteers, as well as Saps and Lazer 911 for the quick response. We urge residents to remain vigilant at all times and to report strange vehicles or persons to the CPF, security company, or police,” Chetty added.

No arrests were made, however, the CPF and the police are on the lookout and will be investigating further.
