Five life terms for tavern killer
An intensive investigation by Margate's team of detectives led to the arrest of both the killers.
The Scottburgh High Court recently sentenced a 48-year-old man for the murder of five men at two taverns in the Mankuntshane and Lamont areas of Margate.
Thulani ‘Ndende’ Nhlumayo was found guilty and sentenced to five life sentences for murder, 15 years imprisonment for robbery, 12 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm, 10 years imprisonment for two counts of attempted murder and three years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition, last Thursday.
Sanele Nhlumayo (20) pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in 2019.
On April 1, 2018, a man was shot dead and two other men sustained gunshot wounds when two men entered a tavern and began shooting.
The men then fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
On April 16, 2018, the men entered another tavern and shot dead four people after forcing them to lie on the floor. They were robbed before they fled the scene.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Sibu Ncane said charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery were opened at the Margate police station for investigation.

Station Commander of SAPS Margate, Brigadier William Slabbert commended the entire team of detectives involved on achieving this outstanding conviction and sentencing.
