Hefty sentence for murderer

Sending out a strong message to those found guilty of gender based violence.

A 48-year-old man, Cyprian Mzindile was given a life sentence in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court, for the murder of Phyllis Lillian Mzindile.

Phyllis was assaulted and found on the road in KwaMadlala, Umzumbe on October 18, 2020 . She was taken to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital with severe head injuries and remained in a coma for a month before her death.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said a case of assault GBH was initially opened at Southport Saps for investigation but was later changed to a murder case.

Mzindle who was from the same area and a distant relative of the victim, was identified and traced by Southport Detective Services, and arrested at his place of employment in Port Shepstone.

The investigating officer opposed bail and the accused remained in police custody throughout his trail. After an intense investigation by Warrant Officer Chris du Plessis and Sergeant Sibongiseni Xaba of Southport Detective Service was sentenced recently.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Ugu District Detective Commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya welcomed the conviction. He added that the sentence sends out a strong message to those perpetrators found guilty of gender-based violence, that the penalty will be severe.
