Two injured in cash-in-transit heist
Police in KwaZulu-Natal are searching for an unknown number of suspects following a cash in transit robbery.
Three brazen robberies occurred on the South Coast, two in Port Shepstone and the other inland at Ezinqoleni last Friday.
In a cash-in-transit heist at Ezinqoleni at about 17:40, a driver and his crew member sustained injuries after their vehicle came under gunfire. They are recovering in hospital.
It is believed that the suspects forced out the occupants and then used explosive devices to blow up the back of the vehicle, to gain access to the cash.
National police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “The cash delivery truck was driving along the N2 at Thuvukazi when it came under fire from armed men who were travelling in two double cab bakkies. The suspects reportedly forced the driver and his crew member out of the vehicle, assaulted them and robbed them of their firearms, a rifle and a shotgun. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen during the robbery.”
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the police or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or tip off the police through the MySAPS App.
In a second unrelated incident, an armed robbery occurred in Reynold Street, Port Shepstone at about 16.15. Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said a case of armed robbery was opened after a 32-year-old woman was allegedly robbed of a substantial amount of cash and her cellphone. The woman was in her vehicle in Reynold Street and it is alleged that two men armed with a firearm threatened and robbed her, and fled on foot.”
In the third incident, Port Shepstone Saps opened a case of business robbery after employees at a business in Marburg were robbed at gunpoint by four armed men at about 17:00.
It is alleged that the armed men entered the business pretending to buy spares while another stood outside. The employees of the business were pushed into a back office where the men demanded cash as well as cellphones.
It is alleged that the employees were assaulted and the robbers fled taking a large amount of cash, cellphones and keys.
No arrests have been made in the robbery cases.
