Drunk motorist found with unlicensed gun

A search of the vehicle was conducted and an unlicensed firearm was recovered.

A man (32) who was under the influence of alcohol appeared in court on Monday last week.

He faces charges of driving under the influence and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Margate police members were conducting patrols at Gcilima when the driver of a white Isuzu bakkie overtook the police vehicle and was observed to be driving recklessly.

The members were able to pull the vehicle over; however, the driver then took off on the D203; the members called for backup from Crime Prevention, and he was stopped on the R61.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, and an unlicensed firearm was recovered.

The firearm will undergo ballistic tests to determine if it has been used in other crimes.
