Policemen commended for robbery arrests

Hibberdene policemen Sergeant Bongumusa Mpanza, Sergeant Phiwayinkosi Bhengu and Constable Nduduzo Jali have been commended for their hard work and dedication.

The officers were part of an operation earlier this year where suspects were arrested for robbery and firearms were seized.

As per the Ugu District Saps Media Centre, on January 22, a security officer in the Mnafu area in Mtwalume was conducting an inspection after receiving an alarm activation.

He was then confronted by three men armed with sticks. The man was severely beaten and robbed of his work issue firearm.

The security officer was able to seek help at a local clinic, and the incident was reported to Saps.

The same evening, members of the Hibberdene Crime Prevention Unit followed up on information with other law enforcement officers.

They approached a house where the suspects were believed to be hiding, and on their arrival, the suspects opened fire on them.

Reports state that police were able to arrest one suspect who was positively identified by the victim. The victim’s firearm was recovered, as well as a second firearm.

The next day, the two remaining suspects were arrested, and a third firearm was recovered.

The policemen recently received commendation certificates from the Hibberdene acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Thabane Khuzwayo.

He acknowledged that the members worked tirelessly on their rest days without remuneration to make a breakthrough.
