232 suspected rapists among 11 600 arrested in May in KZN

As many as 2 521 people were arrested for common assault.

KwaZulu-Natal police arrested 11 600 people during routine policing and targeted operations in May.

* Among those arrested were 232 alleged rapists and 10 people allegedly involved in attempted rape cases.

* Police arrested 161 suspects for murder and 192 for attempted murder.

* 287 firearms were recovered, including 16 rifles.

* 182 individuals were linked to cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances, carjacking, and house and business robberies.

* 2 521 people were arrested for common assault and assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.

* 417 were arrested for burglaries at homes and businesses, stock theft, and theft of or from motor vehicles.

* 535 motorists were arrested at roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

* 1 161 people were arrested for liquor-related crimes such as public drinking, being drunk in public, illegal dealing, and the illegal manufacture of liquor.

* Police seized 709 dangerous weapons, including 637 knives and 24 pangas.

* 131 livestock were recovered, including 63 cattle, 51 goats, and 17 poultry.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said operations remain ongoing, with authorities thanking community members whose tip-offs continue to assist in bringing criminals to justice.
