Security companies together with police have made multiple recoveries of stolen copper in recent months, leading to several arrests.
The recovered copper, often stolen from homes, state-owned properties and Eskom is taken to scrapyards.
On Tuesday last week, Lazer 911 Rapid Response Officer Schalk van Jaarsveld received a call from a scrapyard in Izotsha requesting assistance with suspects attempting to sell copper and brass.
On arrival, Van Jaarsveld reported the suspects were in possession of large bags of copper cables, and copper and brass pipes. The items were estimated to be about 50kg. They were detained and questioned, and reported they had taken the items from a ‘para’.
It was later discovered the items were stolen, and the suspects were arrested by police. They are due to appear in court soon.
