Duo jailed for home invasion in Qoloqolo, near Hibberdene

The community is thanked for contacting the police and handing the suspect over to them instead of resorting to vigilantism.

House robbers, Seluleko Gumede (23) and Mthokozisi Ngcobo (37), were sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court last month.

On February 6, 2023, a man (61) was asleep when he heard intruders in his home in Qoloqolo, near Hibberdene. He took his licenced firearm and confronted them. They then assaulted him severely on the head and fled with his firearm. Two days later, police responded to a scene where the community had arrested Gumede. Ngcobo was later arrested by police.

Gumede received 10 years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and seven years for possession of an unlicenced firearm. Ngcobo was jailed for 20 years, of which five years was suspended.
Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Anton Kapp is pleased with the outcome of the case. “The sentences meted out on the accused demonstrates that criminal activities will not be tolerated by Saps.”
