Brushcutter thief flees into ocean at Umtentweni to escape arrest
Reaction officers waded in with boots, bulletproof vests and tactical gear, and pulled him from the surf.
A man who stole a brushcutter in Umtentweni attempted to evade arrest by swimming into the ocean, but was swiftly apprehended by Mi7 reaction officers.
Mi7 Armed Response teams received reports on Sunday afternoon that a suspect had stolen a brushcutter from a resident’s home.
The suspect’s description was circulated and officers were placed on alert.
Mi7 teams spotted the man carrying the stolen equipment on Tuesday this week.
A brief foot chase ensued during which he dropped the brushcutter and ran toward the beachfront. In a dramatic twist, the thief then entered the water and tried to swim away.
Reaction officers pursued him without hesitation, wading in fully equipped – with boots, bulletproof vests and tactical gear on – and managed to pull him from the surf.
The suspect was detained and handed over to Saps for further investigation.
