Scottburgh Regional Court sentences child rapist to life behind bars
The man's name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and the Child Protection Register as well.
The Scottburgh Regional Court sentenced a 58-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a young boy.
The rapes occurred between 2021 and 2022, when the complainant was only 12-years-old at the time.
The accused and the complainant were well known to each other as they were neighbours.
“The first incident occurred when the accused called the complainant to his room. He held a knife to the complainant’s neck and forced him to smoke a mixture of cannabis and tobacco,” explained Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA regional spokesperson, KZN.
“The complainant then fell asleep, and when he woke up, he realised that he had been raped by the accused.”
As per the court, the accused gave the boy money and told him to return the following day.
“The accused further threatened to kill him if he told anyone what had happened. While the complainant did not return the following day, the accused raped him on two further occasions.”
The complainant later on confided in a social worker at school, who then took him to the Port Shepstone Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC), where he received the necessary medico-legal assistance. The accused was then subsequently charged.
In court, prosecutor Thanusha Govender led the evidence of the complainant, a social worker, the complainant’s mother and the medical doctor.
In his evidence, the complainant said that the incident has traumatised him.
“He said he is the laughingstock of the community because everyone talks about him,” said Ramkisson-Kara.
Taking all evidence into account, the man received the life imprisonment sentence last week, and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Scottburgh Regional Court ordered the accused’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and the Child Protection Register as well.
“The NPA’s fight against the scourge of sexual violence has been aided by the expansion of the TCC footprint across the country, which has grown from 55 TCCs in 2020/2021 to 66 TCCs at present,” added Ramkisson-Kara.
“These centres provide comprehensive services and support to victims of sexual violence.”
