Melville shooting survivor Dewald Beetge’s recovery continues
Despite the challenges that remain, the Beetge family says Dewald’s progress has renewed their faith and strength.
Twenty-two-year-old security officer Dewald Beetge has been cleared of further surgery as he continues his recovery after a brutal farm attack near Melville last year.
According to his family, Dewald recently attended two specialist appointments where he was given the all-clear by both doctors.
This included the removal of his neck brace after scans confirmed that his C1 vertebra has healed. Doctors also confirmed that the spinal fluid leak caused by the gunshot wound has fully healed.
In a further positive development, Dewald returned to the doctor on Monday this week, for an assessment related to planned sinus reconstructive surgery.
He was cleared from undergoing the procedure after specialists confirmed that his sinus function has returned to 100% and that there are no infections present.
Dewald is still recovering from facial tissue and nerve damage.
Medical specialists have indicated that it could take up to a year before determining whether the damage will be permanent.
His father, Karel Beetge, said the family remains deeply grateful and hopeful.
“By the grace of God, Dewald has come this far, and we are incredibly thankful for every positive report,” said Karel. “We continue to pray daily for his full recovery. The doctors have done their part, and we believe God is still working in Dewald’s life.”
Dewald survived an execution-style farm attack on October 15, 2025, during a robbery attempt at the family’s home.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds that required extensive medical care and rehabilitation. The incident sent shockwaves through the local farming and security communities.
Despite the challenges that remain, the Beetge family says Dewald’s progress has renewed their faith and strength.
“There is still a journey ahead, but today we choose hope,” Karel added.
“We thank everyone who has prayed for Dewald and supported us as a family.”
