A domestic worker arrived at her Craigieburn place of employment on January 17, only to discover a suspect fleeing the premises at 08:00.
She contacted the neighbour who in turn called a local security company and Umkomaas police.
It was later established that an elderly man was severely assaulted and succumbed to his injuries.
The scene was combed by Detective Warrant Officer Zarak Anwar Khan from the Serious and Violent Crimes team, including forensics.
The body was moved to Park Rynie state mortuary.
According to Umkomaas Saps communications officer Captain Ranjith Rampersad, a case of murder is currently being investigated. Anyone with information should call 082 3348985.
Umkomaas Saps stated that every effort will be made to track down the suspect.
