Umzinto brothers arrested for dealing in drugs, possession of firearms and ammunition

Police-issued handcuffs were also seized.

Police have confirmed that two brothers in Umzinto (aged 41 and 43) were arrested yesterday (February 5) as part of an intelligence-driven operation.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that members of the KZN Provincial Organised Crime Unit worked with officers from Umlazi and Durban K9 as well as Tactical Response Team officers.

“Intelligence was gathered about the suspects who were believed to be dealing in drugs and terrorising the Umzinto area,” said Netshiunda.

“A search warrant was attained and on execution, the 41-year-old suspect was found in possession of a firearm which was concealed under the driver’s seat of his vehicle. A search inside his bedroom led to the recovery of 46 rounds of ammunition of different calibre of firearms, including those of an R5 rifle and shotgun. Police also found another firearm and police-issued handcuffs.”

“The second suspect was found in possession of drugs, and a subsequent search in his bedroom also led to the recovery of more drugs, a firearm and ammunition. An undisclosed amount of money believed to be proceeds of crime was found on the premises.”

The brothers will appear in the the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on charges of failure to safeguard a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, as well as possession and dealing in drugs.
