Umzinto pensioner arrested for unlicensed shotgun

Members of the public are urged to hand in unlicensed firearms in deceased estates if they do not wish to relicense them.

A 70-year-old man from Hazelwood, Umzinto was arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The intelligence-driven operation was conducted by two members of Umzinto Saps on March 8.

The man’s house was searched, and it was at this time that a shotgun and two live rounds of ammunition were recovered under a mattress in the bedroom.

He will appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on the charges.

Saps has made an urgent appeal to the public to hand in firearms in deceased estates if they do not wish to re-license them.

Ugu District police stated that they have a designated firearms office at every police station, and are ready to assist those with these firearms.

If these firearms are not relicensed, they become illegal for which a person can be arrested. In addition, if these firearms are stolen in a housebreaking and later recovered or used in a crime, they can be traced and legal implications and possible prosecution may result.

Saps has an ongoing campaign to remove illegal and unwanted firearms as these can be used to commit serious and violent crime if they fall into the hands of criminals.

In addition, the public is urged to report any illegal firearms to the nearest police station.
