Fraud alert: Stay vigilant and don’t fall victim

Be alert when shopping.

Several fraud cases have been opened and are under police investigation. The public is urged to remain cautious at all times.

* Be alert when shopping. Be wary of individuals who drop cash near you and claim it is not yours. They may trick you into following them to “share” the money. Victims are then forced into a vehicle, robbed of their cellphone and wallet, and abandoned outside of town.

* In some cases, suspects pose as police officers. They may insist you accompany them to a police station regarding the “found” cash. Do not be fooled by these tactics.

* Another common scam involves fraudsters contacting you about “suspicious” activity on your bank account. They may ask you to open your banking app or provide personal details. This gives them access to your account, allowing them to withdraw your funds.

* In other instances, scammers request that you transfer money between accounts. These accounts are controlled by the fraudsters, making it easy for them to steal your money. Always contact your financial institution directly using official toll-free numbers. Do not rely on unsolicited calls or messages.
