Car jamming incidents reported in Ugu District

Criminals interfere with the vehicle's alarm system with remote signals.

The Ugu District CPF Board advises residents to exercise caution when parking their vehicles at shopping malls and public spaces.

The board has received calls from victims who claim that laptops, cellphones and other valuables have been stolen out of their parked cars.

Selvan Chetty, deputy chairperson of Ugu District CPF Board said motorists indicated that they locked their cars using their remotes.

“On further questioning the victims, they did indicate that they did not physically check that their vehicles were locked. Herein lies the problem. It is suspected that jamming devices were used to prevent victims’ cars from engaging the locking mechanism when they activated their car remotes. This then leaves the vehicles vulnerable to criminals,” said Chetty.

The board recommends that all drivers exercise caution when parking in public places, especially at busy malls and shopping centres. “Please physically check that your vehicle is locked and only then walk away.”

If anyone sees any suspicious-looking people in any parking lot, contact police, your local CPF, the nearest security company, or call 039 6881003.
