Reckless motorists warned ahead of long weekend

Cutting-edge technology will be used during operations.

The KZN Department of Transport and Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court have ensured that yet another reckless motorist has been sentenced accordingly on the South Coast.

On April 3, Muhammad Khan was arrested by Park Rynie RTI members after he was caught driving 215km/h in a 120km/h zone in the mid-South Coast area.

He appeared in court on a charge of exceeding the general speed limit, and has since been fined R50 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment, of which half is suspended for a period of five years.

The department warns motorists that as another long weekend approaches, it will augment operations with the use of cutting-edge technology.

The Automatic Number Recognition System has been fitted to patrol vehicles, and this technology enables RTI and Operation Shanela to detect unroadworthy, unlicensed and stolen motor vehicles.

There is also Crime Recognition Software which teams will use to check outstanding fines, summonses and warrants of arrest. They will use this tool to issue an electronic fine to an offending motorist as well.

The department extends its appreciation to the KZN Police Commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, and the Director of Public Prosecutions in KZN Adv Elaine Harrison, who endorsed the use of this technology.

Lastly, motorists are reminded that no one is above is the law.
