Illegal businesses shutdown, undocumented immigrants arrested in Umkomaas

The blitz focused on business licensing, health standards, safety regulations and immigration status.

A multi-departmental enforcement blitz was held in Craigieburn, Umkomaas on June 4, to inspect local businesses and enforce strict adherence to city bylaws

In a coordinated, high-visibility sweep, eThekwini municipal teams took over the area and arrested two spaza shop owners and closed two non-compliant shops.

Law enforcement officials detained the operators after they failed to produce valid business licences, and for being in the country illegally.

Business operators had to produce valid business licences and show their immigration status.

This joint initiative brought together various municipal departments, which focused closely on business licensing, health standards, safety regulations and immigration status.

Officials audited informal and formal trading sites across Craigieburn to root out illegal operations that undermine compliant local businesses.

Through the blitz, the municipality aims to restore public order, protect consumers from unregulated goods and ensure that all economic activities contribute fairly and legally to the local economy.

The municipality emphasises that compliance with local regulations and national laws is non-negotiable; and that business owners who choose to ignore zoning laws, operating permits, or immigration policies will face consequences such as business closure, asset seizure and criminal prosecution.

Multi-departmental teams will maintain a heightened presence in the Umkomaas region to monitor ongoing adherence and prevent a resurgence of unlawful trading.

eThekwini Municipality stated that residents and law-abiding business operators have welcomed the decisive action, which promises to improve community safety and establish an equitable, regulated trading environment for all.

The municipality once again urges all business owners to urgently regularise their operations.
