Albersville family continues to seek justice for dead son
Dane Nair was found dead in his bakkie at the Port Shepstone police station on June 27, 2016.
Ten years on, a heartbroken Albersville family continues to demand answers after Dane Nair was found dead in his bakkie at the Port Shepstone police station.
Nair’s body was found in his white Nissan 1400 bakkie in front of the stairway leading to the entrance to the charge office on June 27, 2016.
It is believed Nair had gone to the police station the day before he died to report that his life was in danger and that he had told many people that he was being threatened.
“The detective that was investigating his case has since retired and the case has been handed over to a new investigator,” said Nair’s sister, Razia Hanief.

“We were not informed of who the new investigating officer is. Saps has not once contacted us with updates on the case or to advise us of where the case stands. From what we understand the case was last sent for an inquest and the magistrate was not happy with the statement given by the detective as “it will cause an emotional upset according to the court,” said Hanief.
She added that both the police and the courts have failed to realise the length of time that has passed. “The fact that this case is dragging on is causing emotional distress. My father Danny Nair died recently without knowing what happened to his son. The police have merely brushed this case aside and treated it with no urgency, yet it happened on their doorstep. The community still asks us what happened to the case and for the last 10 years we are saying nothing yet. It’s time something is done,” she explained.
According to Saps Ugu District Communications office, the case is still under investigation and has been assigned to another detective.
