DISGUSTING: Massive raw sewage spill affects Umbango River – VIDEO

The beleaguered Umbango community has had an ongoing battle with sewage spills.

Thousands of litres of raw sewage is currently spewing into the Umbango River as a result of various pipe breaks in the Umbango and Marburg areas.

Morgan Naidoo, from the Umbango River Conservancy, said the spill was leaving a terrible stench.

He’s on site (at the time of writing) and said all efforts were being made, together with residents, to get the right officials from Ugu Districts Municipality on the scene.

“We tried the call centre and managers but can’t get hold of anyone. This is a huge problem, we need our health department, water and sanitation department on site now. The Umbango River is dead and this is due to a clogged and dysfunctional sewer systems,” he said.

Naidoo said that a meeting was held this week to try and solve this on-going problem.

“Unfortunately, the area manager who was present at the meeting is not available now to see this huge problem right now. Call centres are not giving us reference numbers anymore. Who do we turn to?”

The Herald has requested a response from Ugu regarding this serious problem, hoping that the municipality gets to the bottom of this huge spill as soon as possible.

Follow up will be done as soon as this information is received.
